ABOUT THE PROJECT

Comcast had an opportunity to convert underutilized space within an existing Richmond facility into a new telecommunications head-end room to support continued network expansion. To support the new high-density telecom infrastructure, the project required redundant cooling systems and supporting utility upgrades within a building originally designed for retail and administrative use. Because the facility supports Comcast’s regional telecommunications network, delivering permit drawings within a 3.5-week timeframe, from project kick-off, was critical to meeting the project schedule and budget.

OUR SOLUTION

As part of the project, our team:

  • Provided mechanical engineering and structural coordination for the conversion of existing building space into a telecommunications head-end facility.
  • Designed an 80-ton cooling solution using four 20-ton packaged rooftop units configured for N+1 redundancy to support continuous telecom network operations.
  • Coordinated structural analysis and rooftop HVAC equipment placement to provide new telecom cooling infrastructure within an existing building with minimal structural reinforcement requirements.
  • Engineered hot aisle/cold aisle airflow distribution systems to maintain operating temperatures for 56 high-density telecommunications equipment racks and DC power branch distribution fuse boxes (BDFB/BDCBB).
  • Designed hydrogen detection and exhaust systems for the battery and rectifier room to support operational safety for building occupants in a high-density energy storage area.

Supported future telecommunications growth by designing infrastructure that keeps an additional telecommunications space feasible for Comcast in the future.

THE IMPACT

This project helps Comcast expand reliable telecommunications infrastructure to support uninterrupted connectivity for customers and continued business growth throughout the Richmond region.
