Confidential Municipal Client Fuel Cell Network Design

  • Information Technology Consulting
3.9 MW fuel cell facility supported by dedicated IT and monitoring infrastructure
12 energy serversintegrated into a coordinated network architecture
1-acre site designed with site-wide IT connectivity for outdoor eletrical equipment
60-100 MW expansion capacity through a future-ready network design

ABOUT THE PROJECT

We partnered with a confidential municipal client to support its first fuel cell power generation facility as part of a long-term strategy to introduce sustainable, high-capacity power generation that can feed the local electrical grid. The project required IT infrastructure capable of supporting real-time system monitoring and utility coordination. As a first-of-its-kind installation for the client, the facility was designed with flexibility and reliability in mind, serving as a prototype for future fuel cell deployments.

OUR SOLUTION

As part of our IT consulting and low-voltage design scope, we:

  • Designed the IT network infrastructure required to support Bloom Energy servers, enabling remote monitoring and diagnostics of fuel cell equipment.
  • Supported utility interface requirements by designing network connectivity for electrical protection relays and monitoring systems used by the local electric utility.
  • Developed a site-wide IT backbone to connect distributed outdoor electrical equipment across the facility.
  • Designed owner-controlled IT cabinets and network pathways to support monitoring independent of vendor-owned systems.
  • Assessed wired versus wireless (5G) connectivity based on updated client equipment capabilities, providing technical input to support the wireless approach.
  • Coordinated IT infrastructure planning with design-build partners to align with phased construction and permitting activities.

THE IMPACT

The IT infrastructure design provides the client with a flexible and scalable technology foundation that supports real-time monitoring, grid integration, and future growth, positioning the client to replicate fuel cell installations across other municipalities.
