Watertown: Lab Registration Process

By Andy Shanahan

Earlier this month, The City of Watertown officially decided to adopt a new Lab Registration process similar to the one that is in place in Boston. The requirements will go into effect for new labs on January 1, 2023, and existing labs must comply with the revised requirements by the time their flammable permit must be renewed on September 30, 2023. Specific information is expected to be published on Watertown Fire Department’s website.

In conjunction with these new WFD requirements, a Hazardous Material Compliance Strategy Report (414 Report) must be submitted to the Building Official as part of any new project or renovation. These reports will outline expected Maximum Allowable Quantities (MAQs), identification of control areas and/or laboratory units, high hazard areas if applicable, fire protection systems (automatic sprinkler system, fire alarm system, and explosion control if applicable), and laboratory exhaust/ventilation design.

Just as in Boston, WB Engineers+Consultants is working with Watertown Fire Department to help them implement this new policy as an approved third-party fire protection engineering firm. If you have any questions about your project, please email me at
