Process engineering is the foundation of efficient and safe manufacturing operations. WHAT IS PROCESS ENGINEERING?

Take steam systems, for example. Process engineers design how steam is delivered and used, whether for sanitization, heating, or moving materials. Some applications involve indirect interaction, such as heating a jacketed tank for temperature control, while others involve direct interaction, like injecting steam into a product mold, plastic, or pharmaceutical ingredient. Both types of processes require precise engineering to ensure performance, safety, and regulatory compliance.

RISK MANAGEMENT IN PROCESS ENGINEERING

Every manufacturing process carries risks—whether to human safety, product quality, or the surrounding environment. That’s why process engineering follows structured risk evaluation frameworks like the Hierarchy of Controls, which helps minimize hazards through system design, automation, and administrative controls. Engineers develop process flow diagrams (PFDs), P&IDs (Piping & Instrumentation Diagrams), and instrumentation process diagrams to systematically assess risks and optimize workflows.
