New York Community Hospital

A new elevator and bulk gas storage for a hospital

Every project that we work on has some challenging element, and this is certainly the case for hospital projects because of very stringent requirements and protocols. At NY Community Hospital, WB’s work was twofold – engineering for the replacement of an elevator and design of a new bulk gas storage facility.

Especially in New York City, our challenge is often that we have to accommodate for less space than we would like for the MEP systems. The replacement of the elevator at this hospital was certainly project with space challenges. We designed MEP systems for a new hydraulic elevator, and with creative engineering we were able to make it work in the space given.

Another challenge that we face on hospital projects is replacing systems without any downtime. We’ve learned that this can be done effectively, with really careful coordination. The replacement of a temporary bulk gas storage facility with a permanent solution was one of those projects that required that degree of careful coordination. The permanent solution we designed included new 5,000 gallon pressurized gas vessels which centralized the gas distribution for the facility. In the end, NY Community Hospital got exactly what they wanted, a permanent solution without downtime.
