A phased renovation project for a fun client

We have a lot of fun working for clients that provide services that we love – Google provides services that we certainly love. The first step of this project was to complete a due diligence study of the space they were considering. The study included a survey to identify the existing building MEP systems. We then prepared a report with descriptions of the existing MEP systems and the modifications that would be necessary in order to bring them up to the new project requirements. 

Once Google was comfortable that the existing systems could work for them, we proceeded with the design work. This project included a 5,500 sq. ft. commercial kitchen. This kitchen serves the entire Google staff in Cambridge. It has a new dedicated gas service for the cooking area. We also designed new MEP systems for the new commercial kitchen, including dedicated kitchen mechanical systems for make-up and exhaust air, and new kitchen electrical distribution system to serve all of the specialty kitchen equipment. We also designed a 4,500 sq. ft. cafeteria seating area. The design for this space included a supplemental roof-top HVAC unit, necessary for both the code requirements and the LEED Platinum requirements of increasing fresh air for all of the occupants.

We worked closely with both the landlord Google on the base-building infrastructure upgrades. 

The project also included 30,000 sq. ft. of space which included multiple conference rooms, MDF rooms, open office space, copy/print rooms, and smaller pantries.  The design of the office space provided a flexible and energy efficient workplace, including a daylight harvesting system, energy efficient lighting, low flow plumbing fixtures, and individual HVAC zones and controls.

Electrical (Interiors)

Prepared electrical lighting drawings for fixture circuiting, specification and switching. Prepared power drawings with circuiting, panels, transformers, exit signs and emergency lighting.

Fire Protection (Interiors)

Prepared drawings showing distribution piping and locations of sprinkler heads, preaction and/or FM 200 systems.


Designed MEP systems in compliance with the LEED certification requirements. Performed calculations and provided submittals, drawings and narratives for all MEP pre-requisites and credits, as required by the USGBC.

Mechanical (Interiors)

Designed HVAC systems including transfer fans, environmental requirements, controls and management systems.

Plumbing (Interiors)

Designed plumbing fixture locations and rough-in requirements.
