Confidential Disaster Recovery

Upgrade and expansion of a disaster recovery site

Disaster recovery facilities are really interesting to design – they are often not being fully used, but need to be absolutely reliable in the event that a company’s main site is down. For this financial client, we provided a needs analysis and then based on our findings prepared engineering documents.

The project included the addition of twelve new server racks in the existing space. We also designed the MEP systems for the facility’s new mechanical room. Our work also included developing HVAC, UPS, generator and ATS pre-purchase specs, and managing vendor selection and bid leveling.

The electrical capacity in the new space was increased. The existing 60 kva UPS was replaced with a 150 kva UPS, and the 150 kw generator was replaced with 350 kw generator. We designed two water-cooled units to replace the existing air cooled CRAC units. The new systems operated on 30% glycol solution connected to roof-top dry coolers. Thirty tons of cooling was distributed to the server room, and eight tons to the mechanical room. In addition, we designed the modification to the existing server room ANSUL fire protection system.

The site remained active during construction, which impacted our design as we included careful risk management plans and phasing plans in our documentation.
